Choose a focal point

Block out a small scene and choose the place you want the viewer to notice first. Think about the silhouette and the largest light and dark shapes before adding detail.

Establish a baseline

Keep a consistent camera and exposure while comparing changes. Start with a simple lighting setup, then evaluate how the scene reads before introducing extra light sources.

Change one relationship at a time

Adjust the relationship between the subject and its surroundings. Compare direction, intensity, and color separately. Save reference screenshots so you can assess the effect of each change.
